Project Ceasefire began in the Southern District of Georgia (which encompasses 43 counties) in 1999. It became a national program, known as Project Safe Neighborhoods, in 2001. The purpose of Project Ceasefire is to federally prosecute certain persons in possession of a gun. If a person possesses a gun and belongs to one of these 9 classes of persons they can be federally prosecuted:

A convicted felon A drug dealer A drug addict or user An illegal alien Dishonorably discharged from the military Convicted of domestic violence A fugitive Anyone under indictment Anyone committing a federal crime of violence

Project Ceasefire is collaboration between the United States Attorney’s Office, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF), the local District Attorney’s office, local and state law enforcement, CrimeStoppers, Augusta State University, Armstrong State University and Savannah Technical College.
